Documents for Oman Relocation: Medical Certificates, Translations and Apostilles
Documents for Oman relocation are not covered by one universal checklist. A residence medical-fitness examination for a non-catering worker costs OMR 30, while family applications require proof of relationship and a OMR 30 visa fee. Prepare each document around your visa route, not around a generic relocation list.
Medical certificates, certified translations and apostilles can all matter when moving to Oman, but they apply at different stages. The practical question is not whether to legalise every document in advance. It is which authority will receive it: an employer, the Royal Oman Police, the Ministry of Health, a school, a bank or a property-related residency application.
For international professionals and families, the safest approach is to map every original document to a specific service before paying for translation or authentication. This avoids a common and expensive error: preparing documents for a work visa when the actual route is family joining or residency linked to a qualifying property in an Integrated Tourism Complex.
When is a medical certificate required?
A medical certificate is not a universal requirement for every person entering Oman. It is tied to particular visa and residence procedures. The Ministry of Health provides a medical-fitness certificate service for obtaining a resident card. The listed fee is OMR 30 for non-catering workers and OMR 40 for food-service workers, including chefs, restaurant staff and café employees.
The official service lists 11 stages, from registration and examination through to QR-code receipt, result upload and approval. Its stated completion period is 5 days, while the examination form remains valid for 30 days from issue. That makes timing important: arranging a test too early can create a second appointment if the broader residence process is delayed.
Children under 16 do not need the medical-fitness form for a visit or resident visa. Applicants under 18 cannot obtain a work visa through this service.
Pre-arrival medical reports
Some expatriate-worker routes use a pre-arrival medical report rather than an examination arranged after landing. The Ministry of Health’s pre-arrival attestation service is aimed at employers and individuals recruiting expatriate workers. A Wafid eReport costs OMR 2 to attest, and the service lists a 5-minute completion time for that report type. A report issued by an Omani medical centre for a change to a work visa carries a OMR 5 attestation fee.
The Royal Oman Police also identifies a medical-certificate requirement for adult applicants from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Syria and Nepal in certain family-joining and temporary-work cases. The certificate must be approved by the Ministry of Health. Do not generalise that country-specific rule to every nationality or visa route.
Translation, apostille and attestation are different steps
These terms are often used interchangeably, but they solve different problems. A translation makes a document readable to the receiving authority. An apostille verifies the origin of a public document for use between states covered by the 1961 Apostille Convention. Oman joined that Convention in 2011, so an apostille can be relevant for foreign public documents issued in another contracting state.
Attestation is a separate Omani administrative step. Oman’s Foreign Ministry states that document-attestation services are now handled through Oman Post, either electronically or at selected branches. Its published tariff lists OMR 10 for an original marriage contract or study certificate, OMR 20 for an original divorce certificate, and OMR 30 for other original certificates not listed separately.
What should be translated?
Translate only when the authority, employer or regulated profession asks for it. For non-Arab nationals, the Royal Oman Police says the family-joining visa application itself is completed in English. That does not mean every foreign-language civil document will be accepted without a translation. A marriage certificate, birth certificate, diploma or police document may still need a certified translation depending on the receiving authority and the document’s language.
We recommend preparing clean colour scans of originals, keeping the translator’s certification with the translation, and ensuring names, dates and passport numbers match character for character. A single discrepancy between a passport and marriage certificate can create more delay than the attestation process itself.
An apostille does not replace a translation, and a translation does not authenticate an original document. Confirm the required sequence with the receiving authority before ordering either service.
Documents by relocation route
Employment and resident card
For a first residence card, the Royal Oman Police states that an expatriate resident must apply within 30 days of entering Oman. The published requirements include the original passport, a new residence-card application and original plus copies of the manpower form after the medical examination. The residence-card fee is OMR 6 for 1 year or OMR 11 for 2 years; delay is charged at OMR 10 per month.
Profession-specific documents can add another layer. Teaching, medical, religious and media roles may require approval from the relevant authority. Ask the employer for the written document checklist before commissioning diploma attestations, degree equivalency work or translations.
Family joining
The current joining-relatives service covers a husband, wife or children under 21 joining a foreign resident, landlord or investor in Oman. It requires digital photographs, passport copies, the resident’s passport and residence card, proof of relationship and an employer responsibility letter. The visa fee is OMR 30 and the service has 3 listed stages: submission, review and issuance.
For a spouse, a marriage certificate is the central civil document. The Royal Oman Police specifically requires a marriage certificate authenticated by Oman’s Foreign Ministry in the family-joining route described for expatriate employees. Start with the original certificate or an official certified copy from the issuing jurisdiction; do not rely on an informal translation or an uncertified digital extract.
Property ownership and residency planning
Property ownership and employment sponsorship are not interchangeable. A 2-year owner residence visa is available for owners of residential units in an ITC, with an issuance fee of OMR 50. The listed documents include a passport copy, photo, ownership document and a letter confirming the unit’s location. The applicant must be outside Oman when applying and must not hold another valid visa.
This route may suit buyers considering Aida Oceana Villas, while buyers comparing branded residential formats may also review Marriott Residences or Trump Cliff Villas. Residency eligibility and document requirements should always be verified against the specific ownership structure and the application in force at submission.
A practical document pack before you move
Build one digital folder and one physical file. Keep the passport valid for at least 6 months where the visa route requires it. Include marriage and birth certificates where relevant, employment papers, degree documents for regulated roles, medical records requested for your visa type, certified translations, apostilles or attestations only where confirmed, and several compliant passport photographs.
A typical family benefits from checking relationship documents before booking flights. A buyer planning to live in Muscat benefits from separating the ownership-residency file from any future employment file. In both cases, the practical rule is the same: document validity, names and authentication sequence matter more than having the largest possible folder.
